It’s Friday afternoon so time for a relaxing ramble around a few sites. Only two weeks late with this posting!

Is it my imagination or is that snake wearing a collar? As far as I’m aware we haven’t any snakes in the garden but we do get squirrels, hedgehogs, foxes and badgers. We had a sheep once but I decided that was too exotic so plugged the hole in the hedge!

Spiders in the bathroom are one thing but several years ago in the south of France I discovered an altogether less welcome visitor. We had rented a small house in the Languedoc. One morning I was standing in the bathroom naked – well it’s pretty warm down there! I was about to start shaving and looked in the mirror only to see a large scorpion on the wall a couple of feet behind me. Gosh, you don’t half feel vulnerable in that situation! I’m pleased to say the beastie was ejected without harm to it or me.

Tip: In countries with scorpions and the like, always check your shoes before sticking your feet in!

Sheep in the garden and naked in bathrooms!!! - are you sure you are on the right site here David? :-)

Hello David

The grass snake does have a distinctive ring marking around its neck.

Anyway, thanks for your comments. I must admit the only scorpions I've met were born between 23 October and 21 November. Your bathroom encounter must have been a very scary experience. Yes, I will remember to check shoes in future :-)

My neighbour had a sheep in his lounge – mind you he’s a bit odd! He also had a cow run up his drive when some fool left the field gate open. Difficult to know who was more surprised when they came face to face, his wife or the cow. She shrieked and the cow ran back across the road into its field! At least cows and sheep can’t hide in your shoes or half way up the bathroom wall!

Changing subjects, you’ll be pleased to know that in the house we rented in France the loo roll holder was at least a foot back from where it needed to be and the mirror over the wash basin was ideally placed for shaving if you happened to be less than five feet tall.

French toilets - now that is a whole new subject area! - The 'toilets' I remember seeing during my visits to France are often in the open air on the side of the road!!! - No holders needed there at all.

Cows and sheep in the house .... sounds like rural Spain where I know they are both welcome in households of farmers.

Perhaps that bathroom in France was designed for Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec :-)

French toilets are definitely a cultural experience! On the way back up the autoroute we stopped at a service area. I nipped into the gents and was standing there in companionable silence with another chap when in walked a young woman. The ladies was closed for cleaning so this being France the interruption wasn’t entirely unexpected. What puzzled me was the woman’s expression of surprise at seeing two men, I mean it was the gents after all!

The designer of the bathroom in our French house may have been Toulouse-Lautrec but I suspect the culprit was an English builder called Charlie. Many a long year ago we had a make-over on our house that included creating a downstairs loo in what had been an under-stairs pantry. I came home from work one evening to find that Charlie had the loo in position and ready to be bolted down. The only problem was that Charlie wasn’t much over five feet tall and had sited the loo in a perfect position for himself. However, I would have had my head firmly embedded in the ceiling under the stairs if I’d tried to use it!

How did we get here from grass snakes?!

Snakes, Toilets, France, Charlie the builder, next link has to be Fawlty Towers and O'Rielly the Builder... what a fantastic series that was ... they just don't make 'em like that any more...

The immortal line in the builders episode from Basil in reply to Sybil's question 'Where are you going Basil?’

'Just going to insert a gnome in Mr O'Rielly dear'

Wonderful.

Warm regards

Manuel from Barcelona

But don't forget that residents of Barcelona have been led to believe that Manuel is from Portugal!
